Dental Cleanings Q & A

When should I schedule the first cleaning?

As soon as your child’s first tooth comes in, or after their first birthday, make an appointment at Sweet Tooth Children’s Dentistry. This first visit is an excellent time for your child to get acquainted with Dr. Brown and her friendly staff, and for you to ask questions about your child’s dental health.

While this first visit may not include a full cleaning if there aren’t enough teeth, Dr. Brown shows you how best to take care of your child’s teeth as they start to come in.

When you call for your first appointment, it’s best to schedule a visit in the morning, when your child is well-rested. And, if your child is under the age of three, Dr. Brown performs a “lap-to-lap” exam where you hold the child facing the doctor.

Why do children’s teeth need to be cleaned?

Baby teeth are prone to decay, so keeping plaque buildup at bay is critical. However, regular visits with Dr. Brown helps ensure that your child meets crucial developmental milestones and that their teeth are healthy, clean, and protected.

Once your child starts eating solid foods, it’s more important than ever to visit with the dental hygienist at Sweet Tooth Children’s Dentistry. Even with great at-home dental care, plaque can build up in between

teeth and in hard-to-reach places, places the hygienist easily tackles with specialized equipment and products.

What happens during the cleaning?

Dr. Brown’s office caters to the comfort of your child the moment they arrive. From a friendly staff to a welcoming waiting area with toys and murals, your child will think of a trip to Sweet Tooth Children’s Dentistry as a fun adventure, complete with movies and music.

For the actual cleaning, the hygienist:

  • Thoroughly scrapes your child’s teeth
  • Cleans in between teeth
  • Polishes the teeth
  • Applies a sealant, if applicable
  • Provides a fluoride rinse

Either before or after the cleaning, Dr. Brown examines your child’s teeth to check on progress and any potential problems, and reviews the best ways to keep teeth clean at home.
